While watching the many canoe trailers going by on their way to Kailua Beach Park on a Saturday morning to get ready for the Dad Center Womans canoe race the next day, Hank Leandro and Paul Gay saw an opportunity to have a mens race on the Saturday prior to the Womens race.
So was born the Kailua Bay Ironman Challenge the following year in 1996.
We really wanted to give everyone the opportunity to share our backyard by putting on this race, with its offshore islands and multitudes of constantly changing and challenging ocean conditions and fantastic scenery.
And after the race, to get together with all of our paddling brothers to enjoy some good food, drinks, and fellowship for the fun awards program. We are truly blessed to be able to enjoy and share what this amazing bay has to offer.
Past winners include: Lanikai Canoe Club, Kailua Canoe Club, Team Primo, Outrigger Canoe Club, and Team New Zealand Hawaii.
