Race Background: The Mālama Mauliola Canoe Race, hosted by New Hope Canoe Club, features both long and short courses in the waters of Māuliola/Keʻehi, navigating around the culturally rich islands of Mokauea and Mokuoeo. Mokauea, once the sacred fishing grounds of the Kamehameha ʻohana, stands as Oahu’s last remaining fishing village. Today, it serves as a living classroom where educational programs teach school-age youth and community members about marine ecosystems, fishpond care, native and invasive plants, and environmental stewardship. Outrigger canoes play a vital role in transporting students to this unique learning environment. The race celebrates not only the spirit of paddling but also the preservation of Mokauea’s invaluable cultural and ecological legacy.

New Hope Canoe Club (NHCC) is an affinity group associated with New Hope Christian Fellowship-Oahu, based at the Sand Island Public Launch Facility in Honolulu. Established in 2000, NHCC integrates traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling with faith-based community engagement, promoting values such as kindness, unity, agreeableness, humility, and patience. NHCC's coaches and staff are volunteers, guided by New Hope's nine core values and the philosophy of "Doing Church As A Team."
